Every year March is designated Women\u2019s History Month<\/strong> by Presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women\u2019s contributions in American history.<\/p>

Did You Know? Women\u2019s History Month started as Women\u2019s History Week<\/em><\/p>

Women\u2019s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California<\/strong>. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a \u201cWomen\u2019s History Week\u201d celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women\u2019s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women\u2019s History Week celebrations the following year.<\/p>

In 1980, a consortium of women\u2019s groups and historians\u2014led by the National Women\u2019s History Project (now the National Women’s History Alliance)\u2014successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women\u2019s History Week.<\/strong><\/p>

Subsequent Presidents continued to proclaim a National Women\u2019s History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as \u201cWomen\u2019s History Month.\u201d Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women\u2019s History Month. Since 1995,\u00a0each president has issued an annual proclamations designating the month of March as \u201cWomen\u2019s History Month.\u201d<\/p>

The National Women\u2019s History Alliance selects and publishes\u00a0the yearly theme. The theme for Women’s History Month in 2021 captures the spirit of these challenging times. Since many of the women’s suffrage centennial celebrations originally scheduled for 2020 were curtailed, the National Women’s History Alliance is extending the annual theme for 2021 to\u00a0“Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Dolores Clara Fernandez\u00a0was born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson<\/strong>, a small mining town in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Her father Juan Fern\u00e1ndez, a farmworker and miner by trade, was a union activist who ran for political office and won a seat in the New Mexico legislature in 1938. Dolores spent most of her childhood and early adult life in Stockton, California<\/strong> where she and her two brothers moved with their mother, following her parents\u2019 divorce.<\/p>

According to Dolores, her mother\u2019s independence and entrepreneurial spirit was one of the primary reasons she became a feminist. Dolores\u2019 mother Alicia was known for her kindness and compassion towards others<\/strong>. She offered rooms at affordable rates in her 70 room hotel, which she acquired after years of hard work. Alicia welcomed low-wage workers in the hotel, and often, waived the fee for them altogether. She was an active participant in community affairs, involved in numerous civic organizations and the church.<\/strong> Alicia encouraged the cultural diversity that was a natural part of Dolores\u2019 upbringing in Stockton. The agricultural community where they lived was made up of Mexican, Filipino, African-American, Japanese, and Chinese working families<\/strong>.<\/p>

Dolores found her calling as an organizer while serving in the leadership of the Stockton Community Service Organization (CSO).<\/strong> During this time, she founded the Agricultural Workers Association, set up voter registration drives and pressed local governments for barrio improvements.<\/p>

While directing the first National Boycott of California Table Grapes out of New York<\/strong> she came into contact with Gloria Steinem and the burgeoning feminist movement who rallied behind the cause. Quickly she realized they shared much in common. Having found a supportive voice with other feminists, Dolores consciously began to challenge gender discrimination within the farm workers\u2019 movement.<\/p>

At 89, Dolores Huerta continues to work tirelessly developing leaders and advocating for the working poor, women, and children<\/strong>. As founder and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, she travels across the country engaging in campaigns and influencing legislation that supports equality and defends civil rights. She often speaks to students and organizations about issues of social justice and public policy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Vice President Harris was\u00a0born in Oakland, California<\/strong>\u00a0to parents who emigrated from India and Jamaica. She\u00a0graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law.<\/strong><\/p>

In 2010<\/strong>, Vice President Harris was elected California\u2019s Attorney General and oversaw the largest state justice department in the United States. She established the state\u2019s first Bureau of Children\u2019s Justice and instituted several first-of-their-kind reforms that ensured greater transparency and accountability in the criminal justice system.<\/p>

In 2017<\/strong>, Vice President Harris was sworn into the United States Senate. In her first speech, she spoke out on behalf of immigrants and refugees who were then under attack. As a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, she fought for better protections for DREAMers and called for better oversight of substandard conditions at immigrant detention facilities.<\/p>

On August 11, 2020<\/strong>, Vice President Harris accepted President Joe Biden\u2019s invitation to become his running mate and help unite the nation. She is the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected Vice President, as was the case with other offices she has held. Now her words have won her invitations to the Obama White House and to perform for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Al Gore, Secretary Hillary Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, and others.\u00a0Amanda has performed multiple commissioned poems for CBS This Morning and she has spoken at events and venues across the country<\/strong>, including the Library of Congress and Lincoln Center. She has received a Genius Grant from OZY Media, as well as recognition from Scholastic Inc., YoungArts, the\u00a0Glamour<\/em>\u00a0magazine College Women of the Year Awards, and the Webby Awards. She has written for the\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/em>newsletter\u00a0The Edit<\/em>\u00a0and penned the manifesto for Nike\u2019s 2020 Black History Month campaign.\u00a0In 2017, Amanda Gorman was appointed the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate<\/strong>\u00a0by Urban Word \u2013 a program that supports Youth Poets Laureate in more than 60 cities, regions and states nationally. On August 19, 1958, 7-year-old Ayanna Najuma, and a group of 12 students together with a High School teacher named Clara Luper, set the stage for a civil rights protest that would sweep the nation in the 1960\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0and continues to resonate in modern America through movements such as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo.<\/p>

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and his practice of nonviolent protest, the plan was simple. The students would occupy the \u2018white\u2019 only lunch counter of a drug store called Katz and ask ask to be served a hamburger and a coca-cola. When they were inevitably denied service on the grounds that the lunch counter was for \u2018whites only\u2019 they would refuse to leave and stay seated in their seats until closing.<\/p>

This sit-in protest was one of the first in the civil rights movement, happening 18 months before black college students took seats at a Woolworth\u2019s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina.<\/p>

Over the next six years,\u00a0Ayanna and her fellow civil rights demonstrators, led one of the longest nonviolent sit-in protests in the United States desegregating almost every eating establishment in their home city of Oklahoma\u2019s capital.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mae C. Jemison is an American astronaut and physician who,\u00a0on June 4, 1987, became the first African American woman to be admitted into NASA\u2019s astronaut training program.<\/strong>\u00a0On September 12, 1992, Jemison finally flew into space with six other astronauts aboard the\u00a0Endeavour<\/em>\u00a0on mission STS47, becoming the first African American woman in space. In recognition of her accomplishments, Jemison has received several awards and honorary doctorates.<\/p>

As she had been in high school, Jemison was very involved in extracurricular activities at Stanford, including dance and theater productions, and served as head of the Black Student Union<\/strong>. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the university in 1977. Upon graduation, she entered Cornell University Medical College<\/strong> and, during her years there, found time to expand her horizons by studying in Cuba and Kenya and working at a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand.<\/p>

After Jemison obtained her M.D. in 1981, she interned at Los Angeles County\/University of Southern California Medical Center<\/strong> and later worked as a general practitioner. For the next two and a half years, she was the area Peace Corps medical officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia where she also taught and did medical research.<\/p>

Following her return to the United States in 1985, Jemison made a career change and decided to follow a dream she had nurtured for a long time: In October, she applied for admission to NASA\u2019s astronaut training program.<\/strong> The\u00a0Challenger<\/em>\u00a0disaster of January 1986 delayed the selection process, but when she reapplied a year later, Jemison was one of the 15 candidates chosen from a field of about 2,000.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Swedish climate youth activist who sparked an international movement to fight climate change beginning in 2018.<\/strong> With the simple message “School strike for climate” handwritten on poster board, Thunberg began skipping school on Fridays and protesting outside the Swedish Parliament. Thanks to social media, her actions have spread and influenced millions of young people all over the world to organize and protest.\u00a0<\/p>

Launching “Fridays For Future,” Thunberg and other concerned youths throughout Europe have continued to pressure leaders and lawmakers to act on climate change through their regular walkouts. Thunberg has also traveled the world, meeting with global leaders and speaking at assemblies to demand climate solutions and a recommitment to the Paris Agreement. Recently diagnosed with Asperger’s, the activist has publicly shared her views on her disorder, referring to it as her “superpower.”\u00a0<\/p>

Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in March 2019, and a few months later she became the youngest individual ever to be honored as\u00a0Time<\/em>‘s Person of the Year.<\/p>

Thunberg was only eight when she first learned about the climate crisis. Since then, she has made efforts to lower her carbon footprint by not flying and becoming vegan and has influenced her family to do the same.<\/p>

As the face of the climate youth movement, Thunberg has been invited to speak at numerous rallies including ones in Stockholm, London and Brussels. In December 2018, her\u00a0speech<\/a>\u00a0at the United Nations COP24 in Katowice, Poland, went viral.<\/p>

“You are not mature enough to tell it like is,” she said at the summit, addressing the Secretary-General. “Even that burden you leave to us children. But I don’t care about being popular. I care about climate justice and the living planet.”<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When Lorena Ram\u00edrez lined up among the elite runners for the 2018 Tenerife Bluetrail, a 63-mile trail race that winds across Tenerife in the Canary Islands from sea level up to 11,600 feet,<\/strong> she was unmistakable in a long, puffy-sleeved green-and-white dress with red trim, a bright pink bandana around her neck, a Salomon hydration vest and a pair of huarache sandals. She was competing against other ultrarunners\u2014there were more than 2,400 racers from 38 countries in the race\u2014but she had not formally trained for this grueling event.<\/strong><\/p>

Her major advantage? Ram\u00edrez, 24, is Tarahumara, a group of Indigenous people from the deep canyons and rough mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico, known for their long-distance running talents.<\/strong> Traditionally, they have used running as transportation and communication between distant settlements. Decades ago, physiological tests found that when the Tarahumara run long distances, their blood pressure actually falls and their heart rate remains at a steady 130 beats per minute\u2014all while motoring for mile after 8-minute mile. They call themselves Rar\u00e1muri, which some ethnographers translate as \u201cthose who run fast\u201d and others as \u201cthe lightning-footed people.\u201d<\/strong> In the past, they practiced persistence hunting, which means they ran game to death.<\/p>

Over the years, Tarahumara runners have splashed across the ultra scene. In 1993, they emerged from Copper Canyon to dominate Colorado\u2019s high-altitude Leadville Trail 100, becoming stronger as the race progressed.<\/strong> (\u201cThey seemed to move with the ground,\u201d one observer told\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>. \u201cKind of like a cloud or a fog moving across the mountains.\u201d) In 2006, Arnulfo Quimare defeated Scott Jurek in the Copper Canyon ultra in Tarahumara country<\/strong>. But Tarahumara runners haven\u2019t typically taken on traditional sponsors or coaching. And none have yet become elite marathoners, perhaps because 26.2 miles is too\u00a0short<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Alexandria was born in the Bronx to working-class parents. Her father was a small business owner from the South Bronx. Her mother was born in Puerto Rico\u2014growing up around a large family near Arecibo. Her mother cleaned homes, and everyone pitched in on the family business.<\/p>


From an early age, Alexandria grew up with a deep understanding of income inequality. The state of Bronx public schools in the late 80s and early 90s sent her parents on a search for a solution. She ended up attending public school in Yorktown\u201440 minutes north of her birthplace. As a result, much of her early life was spent in transit between her tight-knit extended family in the Bronx and her daily student life. It was clear to her, even then, that the zip code a child was born in determined much of their destiny.<\/p>

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a third-generation Bronxite, educator, and organizer serving the 14th district of New York in the Bronx and Queens. Ocasio-Cortez grew up experiencing the reality of New York\u2019s rising income inequality, inspiring her to organize her community and run for office on a progressive platform with a campaign that rejects corporate PAC funds.<\/p>

Throughout her childhood, Representative Ocasio-Cortez split her time between the Bronx and Yorktown. While visiting her extended family in the Bronx, she saw a stark contrast in opportunities based on their respective zip codes.<\/p>

After high school, Alexandria attended Boston University and graduated with degrees in Economics and International Relations. During this period she also had the opportunity to work in the office of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. Her role in Senator Kennedy\u2019s office provided a firsthand view of the heartbreak families endured after being separated by ICE. These experiences led the Congresswoman to organize Latinx youth in the Bronx and across the United States, eventually, she began work as an Educational Director with the National Hispanic Institute, a role in which she helped Americans, DREAMers and undocumented youth in community leadership and college readiness.<\/p>

During the 2016 presidential election, she worked as a volunteer organizer for Bernie Sanders in the South Bronx, expanding her skills in electoral organizing and activism that has taken her across the country and to Standing Rock, South Dakota to stand with indigenous communities, then back to New York\u2019s 14th Congressional District to launch her people-funded, grassroots campaign for Congress.<\/p>

Since her swearing-in to Congress in January of 2019, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez has remained committed to serving working-class people over corporate interests and advocating for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Rep. Ilhan Omar represents Minnesota\u2019s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs.<\/p>

An experienced Twin Cities policy analyst, organizer, public speaker and advocate, Rep. Omar was sworn into office in January 2019, making her the first African refugee to become a Member of Congress, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota, and one of the first two Muslim-American women elected to Congress.<\/p>

As a legislator, Rep. Omar is committed to fighting for the shared values of the 5th District,\u00a0 values that put people at the center of our democracy. She plans to focus on tackling many of the issues that she hears about most from her constituents, like investing in education and freeing students from the shackles of debt; ensuring a fair wage for a hard day\u2019s work; creating a just immigration system and tackling the existential threat of climate change.<\/p>

Rep. Omar also plans to resist attempts to divide us and push destructive policies that chip away at our rights and freedoms\u2014and to build a more inclusive and compassionate culture, one that will allow our economy to flourish and encourage more Americans to participate in our democracy.<\/p>

Born in Somalia, Rep. Omar and her family fled the country\u2019s civil war when she was eight. The family spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the United States in 1990s. In 1997, she moved to Minneapolis with her family. As a teenager, Rep. Omar\u2019s grandfather inspired her to get involved in politics. Before running for office, she worked as a community educator at the University of Minnesota, was a Policy Fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and served as a Senior Policy Aide for the Minneapolis City Council.<\/p>

In 2016 she was elected as the Minnesota House Representative for District 60B, making her the highest-elected Somali-American public official in the United States and the first Somali-American State Legislator. Rep.
