MESA Lite

MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) is nationally recognized for its innovative and effective academic development program. MESA engages educationally disadvantaged students so they excel in math and science and graduate with math-based degrees. MESA partners with segments of higher education as well as K-12 institutions.

Our MESA club at an McCabe elementary school includes activities such as:

  1. STEM Projects: Students work on various STEM-based projects that are both educational and enjoyable. These projects involve building simple machines, conducting science experiments, or solving math puzzles.

  2. Hands-on Activities:  We organize hands-on activities that allow students to explore different scientific and engineering concepts. These activities include building structures with everyday materials, creating simple circuits, or experimenting with basic chemical reactions.

  3. Competitions: MESA clubs often participate in STEM-related competitions where students can showcase their skills and knowledge. These competitions might involve challenges related to building, designing, problem-solving, or academic quizzes.

  4. Guest Speakers and Workshops: The club might invite guest speakers from various STEM fields to talk to students about their careers and experiences. Workshops conducted by professionals in science, engineering, and mathematics could provide students with valuable insights.

  5. Field Trips: We organize field trips to local science museums, engineering companies, or research institutions. These trips provide students with real-world exposure to STEM careers and applications.

  6. STEM Challenges: Students are presented with STEM challenges that require creative problem-solving. These challenges could range from designing a paper airplane that flies the farthest to building a bridge that can hold the most weight.

  7. Collaborative Learning: Our club emphasizes collaborative learning, allowing students to work together in teams on various projects and activities. This fosters teamwork, communication, and the exchange of ideas.

  8. Parent Involvement: MESA clubs often encourage parent involvement as well. Parents could volunteer to help with activities, provide resources, or share their own expertise in STEM fields.
